Board (ing) the ultimate school experience.

British boarding schools have an enviable reputation; they operate in a market with few genuine competitors who can truly offer a comparable product; and their notable traditions and unique histories, developed over hundreds of years, make it hard for new entrants to really compete.

The number of international boarding pupils continued to rise throughout 2019. The latest Independent School Council (ISC) census showed that there were 28,910 such pupils at UK boarding schools in 2019. Despite COVID, we think the worldwide demand for places at UK boarding schools will pick up which is excellent news for the sector. Demand for university places was rising too in 2019 and there is no reason to believe this will not bounce back once things re-start again. This has a positive knock-on effect for boarding schools as many parents who want a UK University for their children’s education will consider a boarding school for the 6th Form.

There are so many reasons why UK boarding schools are still so popular with parents abroad. Pupil-teacher ratios are a big bonus. Independent boarding schools have a ratio of around 9 pupils to 1 teacher, indicating that teachers have more time to spend with each pupil. Academic excellence is a crucial consideration as well. 17% of Oxbridge students were educated in one of the ISC boarding schools. Furthermore, the ISC report 2019 found that nearly 4 times as many boarding school pupils gained 40 points or more in their International Baccalaureate (IB), compared with the worldwide average.

In addition, 70% of students believe boarding schools help develop self-discipline, maturity and independence as well as critical-thinking. This may be why boarding school students are over-represented at the UK’s top universities. ISC found that 54% of ISC pupils continue to the UK’s elite Russell Group universities.

Studying in the UK is not all about work though. Here are some of the other reasons that parents have cited for sending their child to a UK boarding school:

· a friendly and safe environment in which to learn, practice and develop their English language skills

· a unique insight into school life at a UK boarding school

· an opportunity to meet other students from the UK and abroad

· the chance to explore some of our sights and attractions and learn about our culture and way of life

· Try out and enjoy a wide range of fun sports, interests and activities.

· The opportunity to enhance their CVs or university applications.

Here are some of their comments:

“I just wanted to thank you for the help you have given to Carles. I saw him this week and he was so happy and pleased to have found the perfect solution for his son....and is even talking about bringing his nephew as well now.”

“I have to thank you for so many things on my journey researching a school for my niece and nephew. I have to thank you and your team for consistently being there for me and providing honest, reliable and correct information. I can tell you 100% that I would not have been able to have achieved this goal without your help. Your kindness and support have been so instrumental in helping me continue step by step to find the right school. I am indebted to you for this. Only now, that the children are actually at the school have I been able to take in the full extent of what I have achieved in terms of being able to realise an idea that grew and gathered momentum with your support. “
